Colors can be summarized in three simple ways: aggressive, passive, and neutral. You can easily adapt the colors of each room to your personal tastes, your personal preference, and to the purpose of the room. Light colors are spacious and airy, making spaces look bigger and brighter. Dark colors are sophisticated and warm; they offer a more intimate appearance to large spaces. Let’s take a closer look at colors and learn what they can do in a room.
The ceiling represents one-sixth of the room area, but too often there is nothing more than a white paint coat. In fact, for decades, white has been considered not only the safest but also the best choice for ceilings. As a general rule, ceilings that are lighter than walls feel higher, while those that are darker feel lower. Lower need not mean claustrophobic: visually lowered ceilings can evoke cozy intimacy. As a general rule, dark walls make rooms look smaller, and light walls make rooms look bigger. These principles are a good starting point in your quest for a paint color. Bear in mind that the choice of color is a very personal matter; you are the one who has to live with your new color, so choose the color that suits you, your family, and your lifestyle. How to paint walls
Directions
- Clean the area of any furniture to allow you plenty of work space.
- Put down a drop sheet and scrub your walls with sugar soap. You might be tempted to skip this step, but a clean surface is your best protection against a ruined paint job.
Tip: You’re ready to paint now! Choose an interior paint that suits your needs. Due to its leading results, Dulux Wash&Wear® Low Sheen is Australia’s favorite washable paint that keeps walls freshly painted for longer.
- Hide the trim for the cutting-in. Cutting-in is a technique that allows you to paint with a brush or an application pad, areas that cannot be reached with a roller.
- Load the brush by diping it in half the length of the brush into the paint. To remove the excess, tap the brush on the side of the paint pot. Start brushing a few inches from the corner or the lip. As you move the brush, you’re going to set the line of the edge of the paint. Drag the brush to the edge so that the line on the paint matches the edge.
Tip: One of the most critical advice when cutting-in is not to paint too far ahead. You’re going to need to keep the edge damp so that your roller can blend into a brushed paint. If the cut-in paint dries, you’ll end up with two coats and a picture frame where you can see a difference between the cut-in and the rolled parts.
- You’re going to roll out the wall now. Press it forward on the tray to load your roller, then raise it to see if it spins evenly. If your roller is unbalanced, it’s because the paint isn’t applied evenly, so keep rolling it over the tray with full rotations to distribute the paint evenly.
- Start where you’re going to cut and roll across the wall. Roll as far into the rubbed area as possible for best results.
Tip: Paint with a ‘W’ motion. This will ensure fair distribution around the wall.
- After you’ve covered a part of the wall, it’s time to get a smooth finish. This is possibly the most critical move in rolling a wall and it should be done when you paint a section about 3-4 meters. Putting your wall off means giving it a smooth, consistent finish and covering those streaky brush strokes. Just put your unloaded roller at the top left corner of your wall. Make sure the handle is on the right side of the roller. Then roll down your wall with almost zero pressure until you hit the bottom. Remove the roller, return to the tip, and slightly overlap where you just rolled so that each panel rubs the line away from the previous lay-off.
- And you’ve always done! Simply clean up using Dulux Envirosolutions® Waste Hardener and enjoy the beautiful new walls.

Interior Painting Ideas
Painting your home is one of the easiest ways to make your room look better. That being said, there are many more advantages than that to painting your house.
First of all, it protects both the wood and metal construction of your home from environmental harm, such as decay, rust and rain. It can also significantly increase the esthetic and monetary value of your home.
If you’re looking to paint your home but don’t know where to start, here are some ideas for you:
Painting a Wall Feature
The walls within your home take up much of the room, making it a great place to start your project. A feature wall will fully transform the look and feel of your home, turning it into a place that displays your lifestyle and the esthetics that you love.
For example, if you’ve always been sick and tired of how dull your living room looks, paint a wall with vibrant, fun colors, and uplift your mood! Besides making you smile every time you walk in, you’re going to have a reason to redecorate on the basis of your new color scheme!
Decorate the front door
When people come to your house, the front door is the first thing they’ll see, making it a vital part of creating a good first impression. You can use colors such as red, turquoise or navy blue to give the front door some character and a warm tone. Beautiful colors help to set the mood for visitors right outside the bat. It’s going to make you feel better every time you come home to see it!
Painting of hardwood floors
The floor is something that many people sometimes forget because they really aren’t supposed to. Your floor is one of the most recognizable areas of your house. After all, it takes up a large amount of real estate design inside the building. You should continue to retain the theme that you have in your house by painting your hardwood floor.
For example, if you want to keep the bedroom calmer and more comfortable, you might use darker shades such as smoked gray to minimize the light reflection in the room, which will help to dim the room significantly.
Choosing the color of the ceiling
Like the floors, the ceiling often takes up quite a bit of decorative space, so painting it on a particular theme can help pull the whole room together quite nicely.
When it comes to choosing ceiling colors, you need to make sure that whatever you pick doesn’t take too much focus. You can see the basic premise of the ceiling much more frequently than you will see the floor.
What is more, the light reflecting from the ceiling will have the same color hue, which ensures that the room will be showered with light that is the same colour as the ceiling. It is recommended that you select pastel shades such as cream, flamingo or fern.
